Memorial Day 2023
On my second year in Vietnam, I served as operations officer of a combat engineer battalion. Shortly after my arrival in Phuoc Vinh, I met the operations officer of a sister battalion. I was impressed by that young major. He was smart and articulate—an officer who reflected the epitome of excellence in the profession of arms. I sought to emulate him. About a week later, his helicopter was shot down by a 51-caliber machine gun, and he died. Some years later, I attended a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National
Cemetery, a solemn place where thousands of brave men and women are at rest. I glanced down at the headstone where I was standing. The name commemorated on that piece of white marble was my friend from Vietnam. I guess he just wanted to say, “Hello John. I am doing well.”
So, while Memorial Day is a time to pause and reflect, for far too many, “It hurts.”

honoring you....
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
I am not there. I do not sleep.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear Major Ronald Joseph Britz, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter
