The Reunion

Linden, we had a reunion in 1999. It was the first reunion of the guys we served with in Marine tanks in Vietnam. Some of the guys you served with were there.

On the 4th of July we went to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, where the reunion was being held. We had 87 guys at the first reunion. Not bad for such a small number of guys who served in Marine tanks. We brought a memorial wreath and dedicated it to you and the other 201 tankers who died in Vietnam.

We touched your name.

You would have been at the reunion if you could have, it was great seeing and talking with the guys we served with after all these many years.

For most of the guys it was the first time they had been to The Wall. Many were nervous and apprehensive about being there. I had been to The Wall a couple of years before. I knew how they felt. I told them, I reassured them that I had found some peace coming to The Wall. I was told by many that it was a good thing that they had come to see you guys. A few said good-bye to you guys, forever. They are not coming back. They have to move on with their lives. But, it's okay.

We are moving into our final journey in life. Soon we will be with you once again. We have a lot to tell you about what has happened since you went to guard the streets of heaven.

Strange, but, this is the first time I have spoken of God since I got back from Vietnam. It hurts and I have tears in my eyes. I know God understands.

You can show us the ropes when we get there. In the mean time we have formed an association called the USMC Vietnam Tankers. Some won't join. They still hurt to much. They feel guilty that they made it back and you didn't.

Well, I have to close for now. I need to do some things around the house. Oh yes, I'm married for 31 years now and have four grown children and one grandson.

Thought you would enjoy knowing we did something with our lives. It's important for you to know.

You are in our thoughts, always.

Semper Fidelis,
Dick Carey, President
USMC Vietnam Tankers Assn.
Vietnam Tanker, 1967/1968
