Why me!
The incident was on May 26, 1970. Second section, C-Btry 5th/2nd ADA Arty was working with an infantry unit, I don't remember the name of the hill. We were there to provide fire support for the grunts. One of the guys that was in the same squad as Joe purchased a worn 45 auto 1911 government pistol from one of the grunts. He was warned that it was a dangerous piece to have.
Towards evening, I think just before the first guard shift, all of the squad with Joe was in their ammo can hooch. Apparently the pistol must have been being handled, because we heard a shot and Joe came running out of the hooch hollering WHY ME! We got him to lay down and we called for the medic. The medic covered the chest wound and was starting an I.V. line, but the wound must of punctured an artery. Unfortunately Joe died before the medevac arrived.
