Misadventure (Friendly fire)

PFC Charles P. Smith Jr. and PFC Ervin H. Williamson were infantrymen serving with 2nd Platoon, A Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On May 10, 1969, 2nd Platoon, A/4-3, was conducting a combat operation in Quang Ngai Province, RVN, when an enemy force was detected. Unbeknownst to Second Platoon, another element of A/4-3 had already made contact with the same enemy element and requested an artillery fire mission on their location. As Second Platoon engaged the enemy, friendly fire believed to be 105mm rounds fired from LZ San Juan Hill fell near their position. PFC Smith and PFC Williamson were fatally injured in the incident. Another three members of their platoon were injured. Both Smith and Williamson were posthumously promoted to corporal. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and americal4ofthe3.com]

Remembering An American Hero

Dear CPL Ervin Howard Williamson, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
