Remembering Watts

I served with Russell Watts in the 6th Bn, 29th Arty, 4th Inf Div in Vietnam's Central Highlands at Pleiku and An Khe. On May 24, 1970 Watts and two other 6/29 Arty soldiers were killed when the truck they were in had a land mine detonated under it near the village of Edep Edang. They were part of a convoy heading to a forward headquarters at the RVN and Cambodian border. They were to assist in convoying a firing battery back from Cambodia to An Khe. As I recall, they had developed a flat tire, dropped out of convoy and were able to get the tire changed. A land mine was detonated under their 2 1/2 ton truck as it had started back on the dirt road to catch up with the convoy. All three were killed instantously.
