Thank You

Dear Sp4 Johnny Washburn, Thank you for your service as a HAWK Missile Crewmember. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Veterans’ Day is soon. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance, and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Johnny Lee Washburn, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Final Mission of U.S. Army helicopter UH-1D tail number 64-13799

Crew included WO1 James P. Barton (KIA), SP4 John N. Sheffield (KIA), and SP4 Johnny L. Washburn (KIA). Unit was the 68th Assault Helicopter Company although on the operation in which the ship was lost was a joint operation with another helicopter unit, the 118th Assault Helicopter Company because they were 1 slick short due to a last minute mechanical failure to a 118th slick. WO Barton's ship was filling in. As the combat assault lift was in a hot LZ and the aircraft were about to exit the LZ, a command detonated mine was set off, destroying the aircraft and killing the crew. [Taken from vhpa.org]
