Tom Tighe Was a Friend of Mine
Tom was a good friend of mine, we had been in "Shake N' Bake" NCO school at Ft. Benning, Georgia together in 1969, and we met again in Vietnam.
The wall database is in error in two ways: Tom was in the 196th LIB, not the 198th, and I was told by an eyewitness that he was killed by the tail rotor on a helicopter, not by shrapnel.
The last time I saw Tom was on LZ Professional, home of the 1/46th Infantry, 196th LIB. He was going out on his first helicopter insertion, called a combat asssault, the next day. We drank a couple of beers, and he told me a couple of "mini mysteries" for amusement. The next morning, he went out with his unit and was killed by the tail rotor on a helicopter when he stood up at the wrong time. I believe the LZ was under fire, and that he might have stood up, or the helicopter might have turned, in the confusion of the battle.
Tom was always light-hearted and funny. May he rest in peace.
