Remembering An American Hero

Dear BUR2 William Dewey Thompson Jr, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

William D Thompson - memories

Although I did not know this wonderful person, for some odd reason, when cleaning out a garage of a family member, I came across a box of Daddy's papers and they are from your dad. Things that I can't abelieve are not with you and your family. Maybe you have been looking for these things for a long, long time. If they were my dad's, I would not ever stop looking for these things. Please call 508-477-7458 and you can maybe help me out with these things and I can mail them to you. I wanted to cry and did when I found all these things. I pulled some things out of this garage last March and I have just started to go through the things - there was a house fire in 2005 and my brother thought these were important enough to pull out. Now he is dead and I have just realized these belong to you - please my e-mail is [email protected] and my phone # is above. Thank you for all your family has given to so many - I find myself missing this gentleman and I never met him and don't know who he is - just through these things.

My Father

William Dewey Thompson was known as "Tommy" to his many friends. He had previously served in the Navy from 1950 to 1953 as an Aviation Ordnanceman on the USS Boxer and USS Phillipine Sea and re-enlisted in the Spring of 1967 in the Seabees.

He was mortally wounded while building bunkers for the Marines on a hill outpost along the DMZ known as Alpha 3, N/NE of Con Thien, by an NVA rocket. He died aboard the hospital ship USS Repose off the coast of Vietnam.

I was only 5 when he died so I never really knew him, yet I have missed him every day of my life.
