Thank You

Dear Sp4 Charles Thomas, Thank you for your service as an Infantryman. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Independence Day just passed. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it still needs your strength, courage, guidance and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Ground Casualty

During the spring and summer of 1969, C Company, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 50th Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, was temporarily assigned to work with the 4th Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Battalion, conducting Road Runner security operations from LZ English adjacent to National Highway QL-1 north to LZ Lowboy. They also performed Bridge Security in an area below Bong Son to LZ Lowboy in Binh Dinh Province, RVN. Furthermore, the company served as a ready-reaction force to assist the 4/503rd during contact with the enemy. On the evening of the April 19, 1969, a squad of troopers from C Company were guarding Bridge 390 on QL-1, about a half-mile southeast of Tam Quan. After the evening meal, one of troopers, SP4 Charles E. Thomas, took a dive off the bridge into the Song Nom (river) and was drowned. He was pulled from the water and carried by medivac helicopter to the Brigade's aid station at LZ English; however, Thomas was dead on arrival.
