Final Mission of PFC James A. Boyer
On August 2, 1970, a convoy proceeding from FSB Tennessee to Dau Tieng Base Camp along Route LTL-14 was ambushed by an undetermined-sized enemy force approximately eight miles southeast of the base in Binh Duong Province, RVN. The enemy fired two rocket-propelled grenades at one of the escort vehicles, Duster B231, an M42 40 mm Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun. One of the projectiles hit the gun mount of B231, causing minor damage. However, the rocket killed two crewmen, PFC James A. Boyer and SP4 John J. Russell, and wounded three others. The dead and wounded were immediately evacuated to FSB Kien where two of the injured were treated and released back to duty, and the third was hospitalized with severe abdominal injuries. Because of the strike against their vehicle, the crewmen were unable to return fire. Duster B231 did remain operational. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
