I was there

They called man overboard and we manned the rails but we did not see Commander Leaver or Captain Taylor.

The blades of the helicopter hit the outside of the ship as it went into the water. Chief's quarters were below the fantail and our chief came to our work spaces in his underwear thinking the ship had been hit by enemy artillery fire. The next night we mined Haiphong Harbor.

To my Grandfather

Although I never got a chance to meet you I did hear many wonderful stories about you. I can only imagine what the ship days were like and how wonderful it must have been to have some family time when you were off of the ship. I wish I had a chance to know you but I feel like I know you through the stories that have been told. I love you Grandpa!
