My Platoon Sergeant
Top,
You had just been promoted to MSgt. I enjoyed our few months together. I moved to a new position SW of Hui just before the mortar attack at Cam Lo. I thought I was taking the more dangerous of the two options we had. I was wrong annd greatly upset by the outcome. I survived. You did not. I was single and you were married with four kids. I wrote to your family without response. I hope ythey have survived and thrived.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear MSGT Eugene Edward Stout, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter

Thank you...
Sir,
We never met. We didn't go fishing, throw a baseball, or share a memory. Nevertheless, I am compelled to write these words.
Your children lost their father when they were very young. They were forced into adulthood by a war that so many have now forgotten. It was by your example, both in life and death, that they have grown into honest, courageous, and loving adults worthy of respect.
Thank you, sir, for your sacrifice. Thank you for the freedom, opportunity, and liberties that we take for granted everyday. Thank you for allowing us to live in a country where we can laugh, love, and prosper.
I love you, Grandpa.
