Childhood friend

Fred, we began kindergarten and went all through school together. You, Denny Davis, Jimmy Weaver, the Waldron Twins-Dave and Dan, Carla Alexander... the neighborhood gang. Your life was cut short, but your memory lives on. We honored you at our 50th Class Reunion, along with our other classmates who have departed too soon. May your service to our country be your legacy.

Never Forgotten

I still remember your boyish grin and sense of humor. Thank you for your service. I am sorry your life was taken so suddenly.

Ground Casualty

PFC Fred D. Story was a mortarman serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On August 3, 1970, PFC Story had only been in Vietnam six days when he was undergoing regimental indoctrination at a shooting range. Before ammunition had been issued at the range, one of the Marines had an accidental discharge of the M16 rifle he was holding. Story, who was sitting nearby, died after the errant round struck him in the chest. An ambulance arrived with the Regimental surgeon and Story’s body was removed for evacuation.
