Final Mission of 1LT Lewis L. Stone
On January 11, 1963, a U.S. Army helicopter CH-21C (tail number 56-04220) from the 57th Transportation Company (Light Helicopter) crashed during the early evening hours on a small island just south of Ben Tre, Kien Hoa Province, when the aircraft lost its lateral control mechanism. Medical reports from the scene of the accident indicate all seven members aboard the aircraft died instantly. The lost crew and passengers included aircraft commander CW2 Lawrence C. Hammond, pilot CW2 Raymond C. Wilde, crew chief PFC Boyce E. Lawson, and passengers CAPT Donald B. Toth, 1LT Lewis L. Stone, 1LT Charles M. Fitts, and SP5 James D. McAdrew. The Alexandria/Del Ray community and the "Friends of Rocky Versace" remember 1LT Lewis L. Stone with his name chiseled into a stone bench beneath a Gold Star. 1LT Stone, who died on 11 Jan 1963, is the 1st man listed chronologically on the stone benches. All told, there are 67 Gold Stars on the Memorial above the names of Alexandria's 67 Vietnam War Fallen Heroes.
