Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. You died at 18 years of age. I am 74 and have lived a long and fulfilling life. It is tragic you never had that same opportunity. May you rest in eternal peace.

Dear PFC Vernon Stead, Thank you for your service as a Field Artillery Cannoneer. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. The 47th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon just passed. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Of all the Marines I knew who were killed, Vernon's death hit me the hardest and has stayed with the longest. Vernon looked like he was sixteen and working at the Dairy Queen. He quickly became every gunpogue's little brother. Vernon had a quick laugh coupled with a can do attitude. I think of him laughing to this day. And believe it or not, I heard from Vernon on his 50th birthday !! Thank's Buddy !
