Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. The remembrances from those who knew you are touching and reflect their admiration and respect for you. As long as you are remembered you will remain in our hearts forever….

Dear Lcpl Michael Smith, Thank you for your service as a Mortarman. Your 75th birthday is in 3 days, happy birthday. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Spring has begun, and it's Lent. Time moves quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Many years ago, before his passing, my grandfather Dennis Burgess told me of Michael. His cousin was Michael's mum. She sent him this photo which I have cherished to this day.
I live in the UK in Portishead (near Bristol). As a teacher and a historian, I always wanted to learn more about my distant cousin and his service. I would also love to reestablish a connection with his family and friends.

I miss you and think of you often, but especially around Memorial Day. We were such good friends and shared so many laughs and good times at Pulaski High.

I am so sad that left us so early in your life.

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
