THE WALL OF FACES

If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore u8ndone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.

Rest in peace with the warriors.

I have not forgotten you. I chair the Adoption Committee for The National League of Families of Prisoners of War and Missing in Action in Southeast Asia. We will always remember the 1,889 Americans still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia and the thousands of others that lost their lives. We will not stop our efforts until all of you are home where you belong.

We need to reach the next generation so that they will carry on when our generation is no longer able. To do so, we are attempting to locate photographs of all the missing. I was a year younger than Joe, attended parochial school and High school with him. He was a special friend of mine and a special person to all, a leader, one who could relate to anyone - classmates, teachers, adults. A favorite memory of mine is getting on the school bus with Joe and going home to spend the night with him at his rural home outside town. The last time I saw Joe was at Lubbock AFB (Texas) during his flight training. I can still remember the saddness I felt when I heard through my parents that Joe had been lost in action on a flight over Cambodia. The funeral, the Catholic church filled with family, his wife, friends he made from Assumption, Notre Dame, Washington University, and the Air Force, the jet plane formation flying over the cemetary in our little town with the missing plane. If Joe would have lived, today as I write this, he would be in his later 50's - and without a doubt, a leader in whatever he chose to do for his vocation in life. I'll always remember you Joe and shed a few tears as I think of you.

Joe was my drill team commander and friend at Notre Dame as well as my "big brother" for a few months at Reese AFB. He was a natural leader and a great guy. I miss him very much.
