Hunter Shotwell, a Colby College friend
Hunter attended Colby for one year before transferring to West Point. As freshmen, we lived on the same floor and became friends and eventually pledged the same fraternity. His family history with the military was extensive, and he was eager to go to the academy, which he succeeded in doing, becoming notable as a hockey player while there. He and I also played on the Colby freshman team.
I lost track of Hunter after he left, but he occupies an unique place in my memory bank. I was able to talk with a member of his patrol who remembers him well and described his death having watched it happen. It was at least quick.
Now I’m an old man and wish that he had had that opportunity.
