I grew up next door to Edwin. Once he and my brother tied me and Linda, his sister, to a tree playing cowboys and indians. They went into the woods and forgot about us tied to the tree. It is memories like this that I have of Edwin -- playing marbles in the big field, playing in the woods in the tree houses. I remember the day the news came that Edwin had been killed defending our country. He left behind a young wife, his sister Linda, his mother Emma and his father Elmer. I was just a kid when it happened, but I remember the sadness in his family's eyes and the grief of his young bride. The loss of his life, as well as the lives of other boys from my home town and all over this country, never made any sense and it never will.

When Duty Called

What Courage They Had
