Remembering An American Hero

Dear 1LT Jonathan Cameron Shine, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

LT Jon Shine...a man of faith who left an eternal legacy

Lt Jon C. Shine was a dear friend and spiritual mentor during my first year at West Point and his last. He modeled Christ for me and many others and on Oct 15, 1970, Jon was killed in action in Vietnam while leading his platoon against a
determined enemy force. He directed his men to evacuate a seriously wounded
member of his platoon while he, also seriously wounded, covered their movement with fire on the enemy. The enemy then directed their fire on LT Shine and he was killed. Not only does his heroism inspire us, but his commitment to godly living and devotion to Jesus Christ during his short life on this Earth has touched countless lives today and inspired many to do the same...commit themselves to Christ. He will never be forgotten and his legacy is eternal. I was blessed and honored to memorialize Jon's faith in a book entitled Out of the Valley, published by Officers Christian Fellowship (OCF) in 2007 and available through ocfusa.org or amazon.com. All proceeds from ocfusa.org go to the building fund for Fort Shine at Spring Canyon, CO...OCF's western conference center
