Attack on Camp Coryell - January 8, 1969

Camp Coryell (Ban Me Thout Air Field) was located in the Central Highlands just northwest of Ban Me Thuot in Darlac Province, RVN. Coryell was home to the U.S. Army's 155th Assault Helicopter Company which provided aviation support for reconnaissance units operating in the II Corps area. The North Vietnamese Army was displeased with the location and mission of Camp Coryell which they viewed as an impediment to their own tactical objectives and repeatedly attacked the base during late 1968 and early 1969, hitting it on twelve separate occasions. At 11:10 PM on January 8, 1969, an unknown-size enemy force fired 82mm mortars at the base. Twenty rounds impacted within the 155th’s compound, damaging three structures, and wounding two men. One of the wounded, SP4 Richard C. See, a flight-qualified aircraft mechanic, sustained metal fragmentation and was admitted to a military hospital where he expired the following day.
