Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Royce Glenn Scoggins, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Royce was my brother

Royce was the third in a family of six brothers and sisters. I was the oldest. He was an affectionate but hard headed person. Many times I have seen him picked on by others who were older and larger than he, but even though he was outmanned, he never gave up. Perhaps that is what led to his end.
On the day he was killed, I understand that he was an "Assistant Machine Gunner" and on this particular day, (no one seems to know where his "Machine Gunner" was.) he took over the machine gun and eliminated an enemy nest which was causing problems and casualties. After the battle ended, his comrads returned to his position and found him fatally wounded.
I believe his love and compassion for his fellow man and his hard headedness gave him the resolve fight and die the way that he did.
He gave his life so that we could all be free.
