Rest Well Michael

Mike was our acting platoon sergeant in Basic Training at Fort Dix in the fall of 1966. I well remember his outstanding leadership and dedication to getting our 4th platoon successfully through 8 weeks of training. Very sorry to hear of your passing. Thanks Mike for all you did for us, and rest well, my friend.

Final Mission of 1LT Michael Schmidt

1LT Michael Schmidt was an infantry unit commander serving with D Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. On April 28, 1968, 1LT Schmidt was critically injured, suffering multiple fragmentation wounds in Thua Thien Province, RVN. Schmidt nearly died of his wounds and spent the next five months in field hospitals in Vietnam while his condition stabilized to the point where it was safe to evacuate him, first to an Army hospital in Japan, and later to the United States. During this time, he was tended to by very faithful nurses who took excellent care of him and wrote letters he dictated to send to his fiancé while he was flat on his back and too weak to write. Schmidt came home in September 1968 to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. for a nine-month recuperation, after which time he was married in June 1969. Three weeks into his honeymoon, he became sick and learned that he was infected with hepatitis B, which had apparently lain dormant for over a year. Despite this serious illness and many interruptions due to hospitalizations, Schmidt managed to acquire his MBA degree by going to graduate school against his doctor's orders. Shortly after he began his first civilian job, he again landed in the hospital, suffering from another relapse. He died from complications due to the hepatitis on October 29, 1971. He was not quite 29 years-old. His name was added to Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in November 1983.
