honoring you...

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. The remembrance from your friend Larry Mainz in which he indicates you were due home a week before your death is poignant. As long as you are remembered you will always be with us....

Attack on FSB Tun Tavern – June 2, 1970

Fire Support Base Tun Tavern was located about twenty miles southwest of Quang Tri City in Quang Tri Province, RVN. On June 2, 1970, FSB Tun Tavern was occupied by the 2nd Battalion, 54th Regiment of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) when it received an attack from all sides by the 9th Battalion, 66th North Vietnamese Army Regiment. The enemy employed 82mm mortar, 75mm recoilless rifle, rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire in the 4:30 AM attack. Elements on the firebase fought back with unit weapons and received help from flare ships, Aerial Rocket Artillery, tube artillery, and air strikes. The enemy penetrated the perimeter and was able to occupy bunkers on the east side of the firebase. When the sun came up, the enemy still occupied the bunkers, and a renewed assault was made on the firebase from the north and northwest at 9:30 AM but was immediately repulsed. By 11:15 AM, the enemy was driven from the firebase although it continued to receive 75mm recoilless rifle and 82mm mortar fire sporadically throughout the day. A sweep of the contact area revealed eighty-one NVA killed with one prisoner of war. Three Americans from the 501st Signal Battalion (Airmobile) in support of the ARVN’s were casualties. Two, SGT Michael D. Bohrman and CPL Kenneth B. Luttel, were killed and one wounded in action. The ARVN’s suffered fifty killed and one hundred and nineteen wounded. Two U.S. and one Australian advisor attached to the ARVN’s were also wounded. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

My Best high school friend

Got a letter one week before he was suppose to come home from Vietnam.Letter said he was sick of people being killed. Mike bought a 1962 Corvette before he went to the service,I think it is still in his dad's garage yet. Mike was an awesome best friend one of the funniest guys I have ever met. I was at the traveling wall today in Watertown Wisconsin saw his name and cried stayed there for a couple of hours that was all I wanted to do. No words would explain the life long feelings I have about Mike. I have saved that letter and treasure it. I was in the navy during the Vietnam era. RIP Michael D Bohrman life long friendship Larry Mainz
