Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP5 Rene Anthony Santos, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Rene, It's me!

Rene, It is me, Gordon Wax, 61st Aviation Company. I was on leave when your helicopter crashed killing you and the other crewmen. The guys from the platoon saved the tailboom and put it by our tent until I got back against orders to remove it from the compound but the CO agreed to leave it. There was not anything else left of yours.

It was about ten years after I got back home that I cried for our lost friendship. Sometimes when I think of you I think that you can hear me. I still have a picture of you, White Rabbit and Gross in my shoe shine kit. It has been there a long time.

I hurt my back a while ago and I thought of you with your back broken and the helicopter burning up. You must have felt so helpless until the rockets explored. Good Bye my friend.

I have thought about your mom and dad and have wished there was and easy way to contact them. Maybe some day I will.

Rene, It is me!

For others, Rene Santos was a helicopter crewchief in the 61st Aviation Company at LZ English, Bong Son, II Corp. His helicopter gunship crashed killing all four crewmen. We both were on our first extensions after serving our first year. I served one more extension and was discharge in March 27, 1970.
