Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Karl Francis Rynearson, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Crash Information on U.S. Army helicopter CH-47A tail number 66-00083

The aircraft, based out of Di An, was on a night resupply mission on November 1, 1967, when the sling load the aircraft was carrying was felt to hit the ground. This caused the pilot to turn on the landing light which revealed the aircraft was about to hit a tree. The helicopter hit the tree, causing it to crash and burn. Two crewmen, gunners SP4 Louis E. Armstead and SP4 Ira L. Garner, and two passengers, SP4 Karl F. Rynearson and MAJ Charles E. Weaver, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. The other five personnel aboard were injured.
