How He Died

Aalund, assigned to 2nd platoon of D 1/7 Cav, was killed on LZ Compton in An Loc in February 1969. One late afternoon the base took 75 mortar and rocket rounds. Aalund, a Shake and Bake and new incountry, looked out a bunker gun port just as a round exploded in front of it. He was killed instantly. The other men in the bunker were wounded but survived. D 1/7 Cav RTO Jeff Motyka and Machine Gunner Lorenzo Coleman cleaned the bunker afterward. It was not pleasant. I was on the far side of the base where only a few rounds fell. Last week, Jeff, not seen in forty three years, related the above to me in full detail.

Even though I didn't know this person who gave his life for my country I'm putting in a memory to say that he was a good guy. He fought in a war that he probably didn't understand fully, and he died in it.
