Final Mission of CAPT Charles P. Russell

CAPT Charles P. Russell was a dentist who surrendered his commission as a Captain in the Air Force to become a Second Lieutenant and attend flight school. He was later assigned as a Nail Forward Air Controller before volunteering as a Raven assigned to the Ambassador to Laos and serving a tour in Laos. The Ravens were used for forward air control in a covert operation in conjunction with the Central Intelligence Agency. The Ravens provided direction for most of the air strikes against communist Pathet Lao targets and People's Army of Vietnam's infiltrators in support of the Laotian Hmong guerrilla army. Russell flew an O-1F aircraft from Detachment 1 Udorn, 56th Special Operations Wing, 7th Air Force. Most of the fighting took place in an area known as the Plain of Jars. Russell’s nickname was naturally "Doc," and he provided dental treatment to Laotian children. On December 3, 1971, Russell was killed after his O-1F crashed in Laos. His remains were recovered. Remembering An American Hero

Dear Captain Charles Pierce Russell, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

If I should die...remembrances for CAPT. Charles Pierce RUSSELL, USAF...who died for our country!!!!

If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.;
