Ground Casualty

SN Paul B. Blunt Jr. was a seaman serving with Port/Harbor Operations, Naval Support Activity, Da Nang, U.S. Naval Forces, Vietnam. On December 22, 1969, SN Blunt was in a U.S. Navy Boston Whaler (skimmer) boat conducting a harbor patrol concussion grenade run in Da Nang Harbor in Quang Nam Province, RVN. During the mission, one of the concussion grenades detonated prematurely due to a short fuse. The blast threw Blunt and another sailor into the water. Personnel from C Company, 3rd MP Battalion, picked up the injured sailors and radioed the Naval Support Activity Station Hospital in Da Nang to send an ambulance. Blunt was critically injured while the other sailor suffered only minor injuries. Blunt’s injuries required he be evacuated to the 106th General Hospital at Yokohama, Japan, where he succumbed to his injuries on January 4, 1970. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SN Paul Boren Blunt Jr, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Wonderful Brother

I still think of you everyday and miss you everyday. You were my buddy, my sidekick and my hero. I hope there is a heaven so we can embrace each other one more time ( and laugh). I love you, Gail
