Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Dennis Ray Roberts, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Dennis R. Roberts My 1st love!

Dennis & his family moved to a small town Milltown,IN. He lived between Milltown & Marengo,IN. His mother & my mother worked at a plant that made bombs for Vietnam War. I don't remember the year that they moved into the area, but Dennis was very popular with the girls. Tall, Blonde Hair, & very blue eyes. Oh he was the life guard at the pool in Marengo. Every time he took a break everyone got out of the pool, Dennis liked to pull girls in & pretend he was saving your life. One of those was me. He was always happy looking for a good time. Dennis also had a band The Nomads, he was lead signer & Dennis could dance like nobody else (better than Tom Jones). He was two years older than me. So when he graduated from High School he wanted to serve his country & become a Green Beret. Which he did so when he was on leave he would come to my house or where ever I was he showed up. He was on leave before he went to Vietnam, so I got up the nerve & ask him to take me to the Senior Prom, he said yes. Believe me when he walked in the front door of my house in his uniform (words can't express my feeling) & then he put my corsage on, which of course involved him touching me. Mom took pictures of us at home. Then we went out to his Yellow Camaro SS. He opened the door of the car for me. When he talked to me while looking at my breast. The prom was at the Robert E Lee Inn. When I got my dance card Dennis signed the whole page, so we danced all night. When we would set down at the table there were little piano with little red hots shaped like hearts so Dennis throw those at my breast which keep going down my dress, which he volunteered to get out of course.

I changed into blue jeans & shirt before we left the prom. He took off his uniform jacket under it he had a black turtleneck. We were suppose to meet with some friends at Harrison County Forestry. Well we made a stop before we got there. Dennis had his radio on so he sing Every Day with you Girl by Classic IV to me when it came on the radio. We didn't get home till early the next morning and my hair didn't look the same when Dennis took me home. Dennis came over the next day so I could help him pick up bobby pins out of his car. He came over to my house a lot until I graduated from high school was the last time I saw Dennis a live. We wrote letters every week to each other which we signed love to and then one day I received a phone call from a friend to hear there were soliders in town to find were Dennis was missing in action. I don't remember much after that, the next thing was he was killed in action. Then there was the viewing at the funeral home. Dad said I had to go to have closer, so I walked in the funeral home his Dad was standing there talking to someone & said that is the girl Dennis was going to marry when he came home! So I went in the room were they were showing him. It looked like him under the glass. Anyone who knew Dennis Robert from Veitnam I would love to know more about him. Also I would like a copy of the Green Beret with Emblem please e-mail a copy of it. I want a tattoo of that on the opposite shoulder with his name under it. I have wings on my other shoulder for my husband who gave me 9 great years he passed away in 1980. I was 29yr old he was 33yr old & 3 children I rasied by myself the youngest was 1 yr & 2 wk old boy,7yr old boy, & 8yr old daughter. I have 3yr old grandson, 8yr old granddaughter, 21yr old dranddaughter. Who just had my 1st great grandson June 28, I have never remarried. So if anyone would like to correspond with me that would be ok.

I will love you forever!

Dennis .... I remember your gentle kiss and your strong embrace. Your crystal blue eyes and the way you looked deep into mine. I miss your beautiful voice and singing with you. I wish you had lived and that we could have married. I praise God that you are with Him, and that one day I will see you again. Thank you JESUS, for Dennis!
