My Dad

I have met a wonderful man named Doug Sykes that shares wonderful stories and events that he shared with my dad. I was only 5 yrs old when my dad was taken from me. I don't remember much however I am told by everyone that knew him how wonderful he was. I am very proud of my dad for standing up for what he believed in. His sacrifice has ensured his grandchildren the freedoms that all Americans have enjoyed since the beginning. I too am a Veteran as are two of my children. God Bless all of the men and women that have made the ultilmate sacrifice for all Americans.

To Kilo 3/26's GSGT on 21Jan68

Hey Gunny Rimel: It's been just over 34 years since your death on Hill 861 at Khe Sanh, and there has hardly been a day since when I haven't thought of you during some portion of every 24 hours. You were like a father-figure to us young Marines -- kicking our butts when we needed it and supporting & comforting us when we didn't. Your experience and your knowledge, I'm sure, kept many of us alive in those terrible times on 861, 881s, and 881n. I returned to Hill 861 in the summer of 2000 to say goodbye to you (and the other Kilo Company dead). I stood at the exact spot of ground where you died and just like I did back in the early morning of 21Jan68, I knelt in the red clay and cried. Over three decades, and it seems like yesterday. Keep an eye out for all us Kilo guys.

"THINK OF ME"

You know you cannot bring me back,
You know that I am gone,
I walk the streets of Heaven now,
It's my eternal home,
But think of me now and then,
Just as you do today,
Remember that I died for you,
So America could stay,
A land where men are equal,
A land where men are free,
A land I lived and died for,
When you think of Freedom,
"THINK OF ME".

Submitted and written by Loyde P. "Snake" Arender, Machine-gunner, K 3/26, USMC. IN REMEMBERANCE OF OUR K 3/26 KIA. From the KILO COMPANY/3RD MARINE BATTALION/26TH MARINE REGIMENT ROSTER HOMEPAGE. http://home.switchboard.com/KiloCo3rdBN26thMarinesVietnam

"I TRIED"

"I TRIED" my best to save you,
Both you and God know "I TRIED",
"I TRIED" to stop the hand of death,
As I knelt there by your side,
"I TRIED" everything that I could do,
During the fire-fight in Nam that day,
But no matter how hard "I TRIED",
There was nothing I could do or say,
I stared deep into your eyes,
I held you as you died,
And though no words were spoken,
I believe you know "I TRIED".
