Your Namesake Remembers

Alec, I've carried your name my whole life since your cousin Bobby, Capt. (later Colonel) Robert D Blanton, USMC, gave me your name at my birth a few years after you gave your life for our country.

I was fortunate that my father survived the war and was able to pass on your memory to me. I have often reflected on the chances of war that led to your ultimate sacrifice and that also let my own father survive and spend the rest of his natural life with me. I knew your father, but as a small boy, I did not have the understanding or maturity to have a meaningful conversation about your life before he passed on.

It is Memorial Day 2017 and I will do as I do every Memorial Day: I remind people of your sacrifice and how I am proud to bear your name.
