Thank You

Dear Cpl Eugene Rhoades, Thank you for your service as a Combat Engineer. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. The fall of Afghanistan reminds me of Saigon. It is very sad. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Ground Casualty

On November 16, 1966, SSGT Jesse Richardson (A Company, 7th Engineer Battalion), CPL Eugene B. Rhoades (A Company, 7th Engineer Battalion), and PVT Bernard J. O’Donnell (3rd Bridge Company, 9th Engineer Battalion) lost their lives attempting to rescue a fourth marine who was in immediate danger of drowning. The unnamed marine suffered a cramp while attempting to swim across a flood-swollen river in the vicinity of Da Nang. CPL Rhoades plunged into the river fully clothed to assist the struggling marine. The stricken marine was assisted to safety, however, CPL Rhoades was caught in the swift current of the river and was swept downstream into deeper water beyond the reach of help and drowned. SSGT Richardson and PVT O’Donnell also drowned during their attempts to assist. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
