Roy Ratcliff was a 1963 Brackenridge High School graduate. He transferred from Lanier High School to Brackenridge High School his senior year. We met in the school library that senior year. Soon we were dating and I think we both knew it was meant to be! He always talked about being a Marine, so, to no surprise; he joined the Marine Corp in September of 1963. We married in 1965. He was stationed at the Naval Base in Corpus Christi, TX for a short time before being sent to Camp Pendleton in California. In the mean time, the Vietnam War had started. In the summer of 1966 he got orders to go to Vietnam. We came back to San Antonio and were together for a few weeks until his ship was ready to leave. I was also pregnant with our son. He left in August of 1966 and our son Roy Anthony Ratcliff was born on September 9, 1966. He would never hold his only son in his arms. Of course I sent pictures and wrote to him daily. He was thrilled and so happy to have a son. Then everything changed…he was killed on December 15, 1966 in the vicinity of Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. He was shot in the chest which penetrated his lower back. They said he died instantly. His body came back to San Antonio on December 26, 1966 and was buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. My world stopped again for the second time in my life.
Our son Roy Anthony Ratcliff was killed in a car accident on March 27, 1995. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Antonio.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
Mary Frye – 1932
