Hi dad, I miss you...i miss you not being here to watch me and my brother grow up.Mom had it tough, but she did good. You would be proud of her! We have always been proud of you! I wish you could be here to see your grandchildren. They are great kids..We visit your grave often and I show them your picture..but it's not the same..We've been to the wall in Washington,D.C, it's beautiful! Our hero.
Tommy was my second cousin. His grandmother, my great grandmother, adored him. After he died in Vietnam, she would tell stories about him, how brave he was and how sad it was that his two small children wouldn't have him around.
I remember Tommy from family reuniouns and visits to the Eastern Shore of Maryland where my mother's family is from. There were a lot of us, I had cousins everywhere! Tommy and his brothers were in the generation just before mine. When I was young and they were teenagers, they were quite a group. I thought they were all so cute and so cool and I was very proud that they were my cousins, even though I was just a little nuisance from the other side of the bay.
Tommy was the first person I knew in my family to die. I was not close to him, but I loved him just the same. I was so saddened by his death and the fact that someone that young and handsome with so much to live for was gone. It was and is incomprehensible.
After all these years, I am finally able to say it. Thank you.
