Served with Ed in the 199th LIB

In the brief time we had together we got to know each other well. I was severely wounded on Dec. 6,1968 and evacuated. I only found out much later in my recovery at a VA Hospital that Ed and Lt. Spauldings were killed ten days after I was wounded. A lot more of our guys were wounded that day also.

I served with Powers in the 199th

I came to know Ed well in the time we had together. I was severely wounded on Dec. 6, 1968 and evacuated. He was killed along with Lt. Dean Spauldings nine days after my being wounded and a lot of others were wounded that day. I only learned many years later that he and Dean Spauldings were killed. I was then still recovering in a VA Hospital.

I WAS WITH POWERS THE NIGHT BEFORE HE DIED

MY NAME IS TOM REILLY. THIS IS THE SECOND REMEMBRANCE I'VE DONE TONIGHT. SO MANY NAMES, FACES, AND INCIDENTS SEALED IN MY MEMORIES FOREVER. WE BOTH SERVED IN CHARLIE COMPANY, 3RD BN, 7TH INF, 199TH LIB IN VIETNAM. OUR UNIT WAS CHASING A SQUAD OF VIET CONG NEAR CAMBODIA. WE PULLED UP FOR THE NIGHT NEAR A BEAUTIFUL POND CREATED BY ONE OF OUR 500 POUND BOMBS. WE WERE BOTH DIRTY, AND IT SO HAPPENED THAT POWERS HAD PROBABLY THE ONLY BAR OF SOAP FOR HUNDREDS OF MILES!! I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE TWO OF US SITTING IN THAT POND, SCRUBBING EACH OTHER'S BACKS!! I WAS WOUNDED BY A LAND MINE THE NEXT DAY, AND POWERS STEPPED ON AN ARTILLERY SHELL BOOBY TRAP LATER THAT AFTERNOON. I'VE HAD DREAMS OVER AND OVER AGAIN ABOUT MEETING HIS FAMILY AND FINALLY BEING ABLE TO TELL THEM THAT I WAS TOLD THAT HE DIED INSTANTLY, WITHOUT ANY PAIN. I ACHE TO THIS DAY REMEMBERING THE PICTURE OF A PRETTY BLOND GIRL, I THINK IT WAS HIS SISTER, THAT HE SHOWED ME, SAYING "DOESN'T SHE LOOK JUST LIKE A MOVIE STAR?" I HOPE THAT THIS REMEMBRANCE FINALLY REACHES SOMEONE WHO CAN BE HELPED BY IT. IF I CAN DO ANYTHING ELSE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. MY ADDRESS IS 1779 REMINGTON ROAD, ATLANTA, GEORGIA, 30341. PHONE NUMBER IS 770-457-4070. E-MAIL IS [email protected] REILLY
