Remembering An American Hero

Dear Captain William John Ahlum, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

A FRIEND, A COMRADE A SOLDIERS SOLDIER

WHEN THINGS WENT BAD FOR ME IN KAISERSLAUTERN, GERMANY, CAPTAIN AHLUM WAS THERE AT MY SIDE. WE BOTH ENDED UP IN MAINHEIM WITH SARGEANT MAJOR GEORGE GATEWOOD. HE WAS A ROCK OF A PERSON, HE SAVED ME FROM MYSELF. HE WAS ONE OF MY HEROS. I JUST FOUND OUT SARGEANT MAJOR GATEWOOD DIED LAST YEAR, HE WAS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME CAPTAIN AHLUM HAD DIED IN VIET NAM. GOD BLESS HIS SOUL-I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM FOR BEING A GREAT AMERICAN.

If I should die...remembrances for CAPT. William John AHLUM, USA...who made the ultimate sacrifice!

If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.

A Classmate

It is 4o years but it seems like yesterday when I got the word that you had been lost.I was processing out of Ft Rucker going back to Vietnam for my second tour. I have thought of you many times over the years. Your sense of humor made you special. You will never be forgotten.
