Final Mission of SP5 Will D. Billings

During the first week of November 1970, enemy activity within the 25th Infantry Division’s area of responsibility in Military Region III was at a low level as main force units avoided contact and communist commanders put a temporary freeze on operations in anticipation of the American withdrawal from Vietnam. Nevertheless, contact with enemy units did occur. At 30 minutes past midnight on November 6th, a night defensive position occupied by C Troop, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry, was rocketed and mortared, resulting in U.S. casualties. Two 82mm mortar rounds, three rocket-propelled grenades (RPG’s), and small arms fire from an unknown-sized enemy force hit the location four miles east of Go Dau Ha in Hau Nghia Province, RVN. Two Americans were killed and another five were wounded. The lost personnel included SP5 Will D. Billings and SP4 John T. Pettitt Sr. Enemy losses were not reported. A sweep of the contact area revealed two RPG rounds which were later evacuated. Pettitt was posthumously promoted to Sergeant.
