THE WALL OF FACES

Jerry and I went thru our PLC class together the summer of 1967 and the Basic School in 1968. After graduation we met up in San Francisco CA and flew to Okinawa together. From there we flew to DaNang Vietnam together and to the First division Headquarters together . Jerry went to the 7th 'Marines and I went to the First Marines. I think a lot about this assignment, because if it had been reversed it may have been my picture on the wall instead of Jerry's. He was a great friend and I think of him often. He may be gone but not forgotten by this friend. Semper Fi my friend.

Gerry was a man of quick wit, always found a laugh in things others might miss. Gerry strived to be the best at everything he did, always wanted to be part of the best, which is why he chose the Marines. He was a good friend to everyone, the kind of guy you could rely on in every situation, and a good leader. Growing up the only boy among 6 sisters made him tough in all the right ways, yet gentle and kind.

Dear 2LT Gerard Francis Paulsen, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

Gerry was my pal at Sacred Heart School in Cambria Heights. There wasn't a brighter, more witty or upbeat cat on that scene.
When I heard of his passing, I was in Basic at Ft. Dix and I have thought of him often through the years.
To my mind he has always represented the best of what our gang had to offer and after 44 years, I can still hear his voice.
