Remembering SSGT Bierbaum

I was at the traveling wall this morning here in Minnesota. I often think back to the day the he lost his life. Because we had a scout dog with us that day everyone was pushed back 2 places in the order we walked on a trail, I was the M60 gunner and would normally walk where S Sgt Bierbaum was walking when he was hit. It has stayed with me these 52 years as though it was yesterday.

Larry was a squad leader in our platoon. He was killed when we were ambushed the morning of May 29, 1970. Some things you never forget. This is one of them. Larry was a quiet man and very professional who took his job and obligation seriously. Thank you Larry for your sacrifice. It was a pleasure and honor serving with you. RIP
