I was with the Same unit after we landed March 8, 1965. I was with Mike 3-9. Corporal Parham was the first casualty of that time period. A brave Marine that served his country. Semper Fi.

Misadventure (Friendly Fire)
CPL Louie S. Parham and LCPL Robert J. Achas were riflemen serving with 1st Platoon, I Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On March 14, 1965, they were at an outpost on Hill 271 in Quang Nam Province, RVN, when they and another Marine were tasked with investigating a noise. While returning to the outpost, the three were fired on by another Marine on the hill with a M14 rifle. Both Achas and Parham were critically wounded, and the third man suffered only minor injuries. A medevac was requested to their location. At the time of the helicopter was landing on Hill 271, unidentified activity was reported in that area. The three wounded were evacuated with the shooter, who went into shock after the incident. Achas suffered two penetrating wounds, one to the abdomen and the other to the chest. He died two and half hours after being wounded. Parham was hit three times, including in the abdomen and groin. He underwent 6½ hours of surgery by three attending surgeons and received seven thousand units of blood at Zui Tan ARVN Hospital. He was transferred the following day to the 8th Army Field Hospital at Nha Trang where he expired the day after. The slightly wounded Marine, who had a superficial fragment injury near his right eye, disappeared before any treatment was administered. The shooter was retained at the dispensary for observation and treatment. Back on Hill 271, illumination rounds were requested over the hilltop, which dispersed the unidentified personnel.
