For his family

U.S. Army Specialist 4 Walter C. Palmer was born in Dillon SC on August 4, 1948. He attended (but did not graduate from) Gordon High School...probably some time between about 1963 and 1968. He died in Vietnam on May 17, 1969, and is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery, Marlboro County SC.

He is remembered at The Wall in Washington DC on Panel 24W - Line 34, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial 'Wall of Faces' online at
.

His parents - James F. Palmer, of Dillon, and Ethel Palmer, of Brooklyn NY - as well as his brother, James Willie Palmer, and his sister Mary McRae, are all deceased.

The all-volunteer photo project of The Wall of Faces is nearly complete, but 89 men are still not memorialized by an image. We are hoping that friends and former classmates might be able to locate at least one photo of SP4 Palmer. Whoever wrote the following article that ran in 2018 may have known the Palmer family, and we'd appreciate any and all help with the search.

I Remember Your Sacrifice

You were one of the brave that answered the call. You honored us by your service and sacrifice. We now honor you each time we stand and sing the words “THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE”. Rest in Peace and Honor Walter.

From a friend

I was the fire team leader and Walter was a friend of mine. I was with Walter when he tripped a booby trapped 60mm mortar round. We were in dense jungle growth at the time, and it took about 45 minutes to back track to a less dense place to chopper him out, possibly contributing to his death. Walter was an inspiration to us all, and was greatly missed.

I served with Walter. We were in the same platoon, but he was in another squad. It needs to be said that he was in Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry, 5th Infantry Division.
