Thank You

Dear Sgt Lavelle Nobles, I hope someone puts a better photo of you here. After all, it is a wall of faces. Thank you for your service as a Rifleman. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It’s a New Year, but not necessarily better. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Ground Casualty

SGT Lavelle M. Nobles was a rifleman serving with 3rd Platoon, D Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On August 11, 1965, SGT Nobles’ unit was patrolling along the Ben Van River in LVTP-5 tracked amphibious armored fighting vehicles, seven miles northwest of Chu Lai near Ky Xuan Island in Quang Tin Province, RVN. His amphibious tractor (AmTrac) became grounded on a sandbar and Nobles reportedly entered the river in an attempt to swim to a small boat. Before he reached it, he was seen to go under and went missing. Several Marine units were employed to try and locate his body, including a Recon Team. The Marines searched on foot and by tractor along both sides of the river. Nobles’ body was eventually found by the Recon Team in some elephant grass along the river where a lowering tide had exposed it. His remains were placed on an AmTrac and taken to Chu Lai where they were turned over to Graves Registration for processing and return to the United States.
