honoring you....

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

Brother

Rusty was the 2nd child of Melvin and Esther Peterson Nelson. His older sister, Gayle, joined the USMC in September 1965 and served at Paris Island, SC for 3 years. His other two sisters, Candie and Kimberly, moved to CA in 1965 with their Mom and stepfather. Candie subsequently moved back to MN where she lives today. Kimberly currently lives in FL. Rusty’s best friend, and “brother from another mother”, Darrell Shaw, was with Russ when he died, but not on that mission. He passed in 2020 due to an unfortunate accident. We remember Russ as a caring man whose love for his family and country prompted him to enlist with his brother Darrell “to keep Darrell safe”. He did that. Russ was “in country” a mere 4 months before he was KIA. He was less than 2 months shy of his 21st birthday. We miss him.
