Thank You

Dear PFC Thomas McStoots, Thank you for your service as a Rifleman. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Today is the anniversary of the terror attacks. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Final Mission of PFC Thomas H. McStoots

On June 12, 1969, a contingent of Marines from M Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, were manning a listening post (LP) two miles south of Marble Mountain Air Field in Quang Nam Province, RVN. At approximately 1:20 AM, the LP was hit by enemy small arms fire and six or seven M26 grenades. Two Marines in the LP were seriously wounded. A third Marine, PFC Thomas W. Dolan III, dragged the two wounded to a nearby bunker while a third Marine provided covering fire. The enemy then fired a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) at the bunker. Dolan provided first aid for wounded while returning fire on the hostile force. He then tried to extract another wounded Marine when a second RPG hit the bunker, mortally wounding him. Another Marine, PFC Thomas H. McStoots, also died in the attack. The Marines responded to the attack with a fire mission on the suspected enemy position. A later check of area where the attack came from revealed assorted enemy equipment, including Chicom grenades, an AK-47 magazine, and two blood trails leading away from the location. Dolan was posthumously awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for heroism. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and PFC Dolan’s Navy Commendation Medal citation]
