honoring you....

War drew us from our homeland
In the sunlit springtime of our youth.
Those who did not come back alive remain
in perpetual springtime -- forever young --
And a part of them is with us always.

Thank You

Dear Ssgt Donald McMains, Thank you for your service as an Infantryman. Your 73rd birthday is soon, happy birthday. I researched you on your 51st anniversary, sad. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It is Labor Day weekend. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Silver Star Citation

Silver Star

Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Donald Henry McMains, Jr. (ASN: US-546666898), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant McMains distinguished himself by heroic actions on 9 August 1969, while serving as Acting Platoon Sergeant with Company B, 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a sweep operation, Company B came in contact with a large enemy force. Immediately, Sergeant McMains began crawling towards the hostile positions as he threw hand grenades on the aggressors. As he was maneuvering through the area, Sergeant McMains was fatally wounded. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Sergeant McMains' bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SSGT Donald Henry McMains Jr, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
