Friend, School Bus Driver, Fellow Vietnam Vet

Bill was a great guy. We graduated together from Broughton Highschool (‘65) and were school bus drivers. I can recall some of the good times we had as bus drivers. I also remember our senior year when a group of us got together and worked on a float for the homecoming parade.

I must have lost track of Bill after highschool because I do not recall knowing that he had enlisted in the Marines. Bill was only 20 years old when he was killed on September 2, 1967. At the time of his death I was in basic training at Ft. Bragg and turned 21 when I did my tour in Vietnam in 1968. Ironically, at that time, 20 didn't seem so young. There were a lot of guys there who were younger. But now, I look at 20 year-old young people in a different light. September 2 will always be a special day in my life, as it has been for Bill's family, as my wife and I lost our oldest son in a motorcycle accident on that day in 1992. To us, our son was still just a kid; but yet, he was 22, two years older than Bill was at his death.

I have visited the wall and touched Bill's name. Bill touched many lives and will continue to live on in the memories of his family, friends, and comrades-in-arms.

REMEMBERING

I DID NOT KNOW BILL MCGEE PERSONALLY. I KNEW HIS YOUNGER BROTHER. WE ALL GRADUATED FROM BROUGHTON HIGH SCHOOL IN RALEIGH. I FOUND BILL'S NAME ON THE WALL WHEN I VISITED THERE SEVERAL YEARS AGO. LINDA RHYNE, CHARLOTTE, NC
