Remembering An American Hero

Dear Captain Bernard A Mcdermott III, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

If I should die...remembranmces for CAPT. Bernard A. McDERMOTT III, USMC...who died for our country!

If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.

I was with Him at the End

I barely knew Capt. McDermott at 3rd MP Bn when he was KIA on 9-06-69. I was a L/Cpl assigned to helping Capt. McDermott to an heli-pad for medivac with another Marine when he died. It was a huge mortar/rocket attack. I had only known him 2-3 weeks after his arrival at 3rd MP's. He got a few of us interested in Karate as a means to help keep us in shape. Although I knew little about him because he was new and I was an enlisted man, but he had good character and saw the good in his fellow Marines. This has been difficult and emotional to re-visit. I wanted to contact his Family.
