Thank You

Dear Captain Walter McCarthy, Thank you for your service as an Infantry Unit Commander. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Time passes quickly, but our world needs help. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Final Mission of CAPT Walter R. McCarthy Jr.

CAPT Walter R. McCarthy Jr. and 1LT William F. Train III were military advisors assigned to Advisory Team, 5th ARVN Division, Army Element, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Vietnam (MAAGV). On June 16, 1962, they were traveling in an Army of the Republic of Viet Nam (ARVN) convoy north of Saigon when it was ambushed by Viet Cong guerrillas. The attack took place along a tree-lined road near the town of Ben Cat when the guerrillas detonated electric mines, then opened up with automatic weapons fire. The Americans were killed with about 15 Vietnamese troops. A rescue unit found them lying among the dead and wounded, their three military vehicles ablaze. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
