A Young Friend Lost
Chester A. Molley: he was so proud of his name, his family, his Catholicism, his country. I and Chet's co-workers at the UT Daily Beacon heard often of his wife and his young daughter Melissa, and you could tell by his voice how much they meant to him. When he told us he was joining the Marines and would be a platoon leader, most of us were horrified. But Chet said if he was going, he wanted to be among the best. A mutual friend, Jack Whitehead, called me at my job in Atlanta the next year to say Chet had been killed. They were great jokers; I thought it was a joke. It was impossible to imagine someone so young, so vital and real, being gone. I will always remember his humor, his honest friendship, with great affection.
